The Alter Rebbe arranged his marriage to his daughter, Rebbetzin Devorah Leah, who passed away shortly after. The chassidim asked the Alter Rebbe: Why did he trouble himself to become related through marriage to Reb Noach for his daughter when there were the students of the Maggid of Mezritch? From this marriage was born Rabbi Menachem Mendel, who later became the third Rebbe of Chabad and became known as the "Tzemach Tzedek".

When the Alter Rebbe published the Tanya for the first time, Rabbi Shalom Shachna was involved in its publication.

After the passing of Rebbetzin Devorah Leah - mother of the Tzemach Tzedek - the Alter Rebbe arranged a match between her husband Reb Shalom Shachna and Rebbetzin Rivka, daughter of Rabbi Aharon of Karlin (one of the students of the Maggid of Mezritch). From this marriage, two daughters were born, Devorah and Esther Hadas.

He passed away in the summer of 5567.
